Building an Image: from Intuition to Vision

Program of the workshop by Vincent Longuemare:
...I would like to make an Experiment, which on one side will allow the students to re-elaborate the themes developed in the previous courses and then try to "walk into the light".
Since we can guess some of the basic principals of Light has been acquired, we will try to get into Lighting: the very concrete actions of bringing light on Stage.
See the light from Behind or Inside, see it into the three dimensions of Space.
First of all we will have to recall at personal sensibility: the intuition: I do see something and I want to translate it into an Image, to communicate it as clearly as possible.
How do I see, which instruments do I use, which instruments will I recall from personal cultural knowledge?
We will not talk of optics, physics or perception but try to investigate on stage, in the three dimensions, we are supposed to know, which are the best instruments I know to translate in light an Information, a Feeling, an Atmosphere, how to bring Light into Action.
The main question in order to build an Image is a constant dialogue between Intuition and Knowledge.
Secondly,we have to consider either space either light as belonging to the material world, something to be sculpted and shaped, rather than a kind of abstraction or immaterial world. In order to bring the students to be able to read space and light, I do practice three main pedagogic principles:
- Separate /divide the different aspects of space and light in order to recognises and nominate them: give a precise name to what we see or feel.
- Define a clear language so that all professional figures can relate together knowing that they are speaking about the same thing!
- Re-unite in order to understand and practice.
It is very important that we develop a common language, that we learn to recognise and name all aspects of a material we do not see by itself, and capture the words and instruments to Act in Light.
In the first hours we will recall the basics of light, so that we get to know each other and at which level we can talk, then start to exercise: the main topic I would like to explore is the relation between Light and Space and the way, Light is able to built a Space, to organize it and architecture it.
In the second part of the workshop we will address directly on learning to recognize and use at the best the main instruments dedicated to organize the vision on stage and create coherent images: to define a composition. (...)
